Flower Beauty from Drew Barrymore: First Impressions

Today I am going to be doing a first impressions post of a new makeup line from Drew Barrymore called Flower Beauty. Now I said I was going on a no-buy but this is just one launch I couldn't resist.

Flower Beauty is a line of cosmetics endorsed, owned and created by actress Drew Barrymore. Their philosophy, which can be found on the Flower Beauty website, is that they want to provide luxury cosmetics at an affordable price. They are doing this by cutting out the advertising costs and having Drew promote the brand herself. By doing that they can basically put all of their resources into the products themselves, which I find to be the best idea I have seen in this industry.

Drew has created a full line of cosmetics including face, eye, and lip products, even nail polish. She has created 6 different kinds of foundation, 2 concealers, 6 lip products and numerous products for the eyes. It is amazing how much there is to check out and over a couple trips I have definitely had my share of time spent glancing at the gorgeous display.

The products that really stood out to me in the store were for the face. There was just so much to choose from that I couldn't choose, so I bought almost all of them. Insane I know but once you feel these products on your skin you will understand. They have this silky texture that is unlike anything I have seen in the drugstore. They use the term 'Soft-Focus Complex' to describe their products and I am not sure if that has anything to do with the texture but you just have to feel it to understand what I am talking about.

The products are housed in different types of packaging but they all have the same theme of white, clear and rose gold accents. I find it to be very simplistic and not too fussy which I love. Some of the products with the flower/quilted clear tops also have a magnetic closure that works well. Most of the products are very user-friendly with the foundation having a pump, both powders coming with decent applicators, etc.

All of the products are sold exclusively at Wal-Mart with prices ranging from around $5 to $14. I personally find these prices to be incredible as the quaility of most of the products are worth more than the price tags.

I guess I will start with the face products because I have raved about them so much already but I just want to say up front that I will not be going into length about each product like a review. These are just first impressions because I have only had these products for a few weeks and because of that it is possible that my opinions will change. I think it will be best if I point-form most of it as this post is already longer than expected. Overall though I am impressed, as my rave above probably proves and now I will jump into the products that I have purchased.

Face Products

The range of face products is what really stood out to me. Drew has created a foundation, a stick foundation, a tinted moisturizer, a BB cream, a pressed powder and a loose powder, two types of concealers and a primer. Basically there is a foundation for everyone and for me there is apparently more than one.

About Face Foundation - $13.98
-lightweight, pigmented, buildable
-medium coverage (depends on application)
-silky formula sits beautifully on the skin
-looks like skin
-has a pump

BB Cream - $12.98
-very pigmented but still feels lightweight on the skin
-creamy texture
-full coverage if applied well
-silky formula
-mostly yellow undertones
-drugstore comparsion: Revlon Photoready BB Cream has similar texture

Skincognito Stick Foundation - $8.98
-yet to try as foundation, tried as thick concealer but doesn't work, blends away too much which might work well as a foundation

Powder Trip Powder Foundation - $9.98
-light coverage, more of a setting powder
-finely milled, great for touch ups
-slight shimmer which barely transfers to skin
-decent brush applicator

Concealers

From L to R: Flower Lighten Up! Brightening Concealer in BC1, Flower Secret Service Cover-Up in CU2, CU3, CU4.

Lighten Up! Brightening Concealer - $7.98
-click up type pen, actually works well, 1-2 clicks and there is enough product
-great coverage
-does not cake under eyes - silky formula
-thick consistency compared to standard liquid concealers

Secret Sevice Cover-Up - $7.98
-tinted concealers, all have a skin tone base but tinted either yellow, pink, peach, or dark peach
-amazing quality, silky and doesn't cake up at all
-tints work well under eyes to camouflage dark circles

Eyes
The range has numerous eye products including eyeshadow quads, creme eyeshadows, mascaras, pencil and pen eyeliners and brow pencils

From L to R: Flower Shadow Play Eyeshadow Quad in EQ4 Smoke and Mirrors and EQ3 Foxy Browns.

Shadow Play Eyeshadow Quad - $9.98
-4 eyeshadow quads, 2 neutral (one cool, one warm toned) 2 colored (one purple, one blue)
-look and swatch beautifully, but fade away (look at swatch photo where they fade away mid-swatch, barely touched and they basically brushed off)
-very sheer when applied to lid, even with primer, fades away fasts - only lasts a couple of hours

Flower Zoom-In Ultimate Mascara in Intense Black

Zoom-In Ultimate Mascara - $7.98
-idea is awesome, execution is pretty good
-formula is very wet/thin, personally waiting for it to dry down a bit (full review definitely to come, cool idea - check photos)
-currently lengthens more than volumizes

Mascara Demo: Somehow the brush is being twisted and pulled into the handle to created the different types of brush. You can tell this from the actual length of the mascara wand after each turn.

Blush and Lips
The range has two different types of blushes, one being a blush and bronzer duo, the other is a creme blush

The range also has numerous lip products including lipsticks, lip glosses, lip pencils and sheer lip tints

Clockwise from Left: Flower Ready, Set, Glow! Blush/Bronzer Duo in Gloriously Golden, Flower Win Some, Rouge Some Creme Blush in Peach Blossom, Flower Sheer Up Lip Tint in Sheer Blossom.

Ready, Set, Glow! Blush/Bronzer Duo - $9.98
-amazing pigmentation, especially the blush
-all matte except for peach duo (weird to call it glow?)
-great longevity
-duos match well for different skin tones

Win Some, Rouge Some Creme Blush - $7.98
-creme to powder blush - amazing
-beautiful colors for every skin tone
-staying power similar to regular blush
-love the small packaging

Sheer Up Lip Tint - $7.98
-similar style to other chubby sticks
-cannot say how it performs because it has huge glitter chunks and I just can't wear it, disappointing for me, possibly great for others.

I tried to keep it short and sweet as this is just a first impressions and I am sure that a full review of some of the products is going to happen. Overall I am so impressed with all of the face products, blushes included and those would be what I would recommend to check out first, especially the BB cream, foundation, concealers and creme blush.

The only negative I have is with the eyeshadow quads. They unfortunately are too soft and velvety that they just fade away. I have tried wearing them multiple times in different ways and every time I can't get any color to show up on the lid, and what I do fades away in just a couple of hours. They look so beautiful and I am trying to make them work but I would say stay away from them because even if I do get them to work it will probably take a lot of effort to do so.

In conclusion, I am first and foremost sorry for the length of this post but I love, love, love this new line of beauty products and that is why I cannot stop talking about them. I think Drew Barrymore has done an incredible job and it is something I personally would endorse so she should be proud. Overall I think it is worth it to check out this new range and enjoy some quaility beauty products at an incredible price. - laugh often, amanda

  1. thank you for the swatches. I now know what my shades might be. ^^ These have a good amount of yellow which is rare in some drugstore foundations.

  2. You're welcome, most of them are very yellow, only a few shades have a pink undertone in the foundation, while the BB cream shades are mostly all yellow.
